How To Maintain Pitchers Mound & Home Plate
During every game, pitchers mound and home plate areas encounter the most stress. It is important to check these areas and properly repair them to prevent injury. Here are a few maintenance steps that can prevent injury and extensive renovations.
Step 1: Tamp or roll uneven packing clay
Step 2: Lightly moisten existing clay to ensure new clay will bind. (Note: Do not soak the clay. Extremely wet clay will cause sticking to tamp or roller in step 5!)
Step 3: Scuff up or loosen damaged area being repaired with shovel
Step 4: Add new clay to damaged area.
Step 5: Tamp newly installed packing clay into ground.
Step 6: Rake and contour newly repaired area.
Step 7: Re-water entire area.
