How To Maintain Base Paths
It is best to maintain as much of the base paths by hand as possible using a narrow drag or field rake. Make sure that the drag does not overlap the grass area to prevent the formation of a “lip” or ridge at the grass edge. Another tip for preventing lips in these areas, is to always rake up and down the base lines, rather than side to side. Side to side raking may also cause an unwanted lower areas in the middle of the base path. Any weeds should be removed and grass lines should be edged at signs of over growth and lip formation. (More preventative lip information under "How to Maintain the Skinned Infield.")
OVERVIEW:
1. Regularly drag base paths with narrow drag or use rake up and down base paths.
2. Remove weeds
3. Have grass lines edged routinely to prevent overgrowth or high lip formation.
*Edging is recommended to be done by professionals annually, in order to maintain proper field dimension and quality.
